Allan Jude is VP of Engineering at Klara Inc., a global FreeBSD Professional Services and Support company. He also hosts the weekly video podcast BSDNow. A FreeBSD user since 2.2 and sysadmin since 4.5, became a FreeBSD docs committer in 2014, src committer in 2015, and was elected to the core team in 2016. In the spring of 2015, he published "FreeBSD Mastery: ZFS" with Michael W. Lucas, followed by "FreeBSD Mastery: Advanced ZFS" in 2016.
ZFS is an advanced hybrid volume manager & filesystem created at Sun Microsystems in 2001, and became open source in 2005, and has since been ported to many different operating systems, both open and closed: illumos (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, OS X, Windows, NetBSD, and others.
In 2013, the OpenZFS project was announced, to coordinate the effort to keep OpenZFS up-to-date and compatible across all of these operating systems. After more than 6 years, a look back at what has been accomplished so far, and what to expect in 2019 and beyond.
