Michael Dexter

from FreeBSD

Michael has used Unix systems since just prior to the announcement of the Linux kernel and collapse of the Soviet Union. He has helped raise money for various BSD development efforts and usher the bhyve hypervisor into the FreeBSD operating system. Michael lives in Portland, Oregon where he provides commercial OpenZFS and FreeNAS support, hosts the Portland Linux/Unix Group, and lives with his wife and three children.

The FreeBSD Unix Operating System just celebrated its 25th anniversary and traces its roots to decades more of Unix development at the University of California, Berkeley. While FreeBSD continues the tradition of a true Unix environment, it offers cutting-edge features like the OpenZFS file system, Jails containment system, bhyve hypervisor and Packet Filter firewall. FreeBSD runs on the smallest embedded systems up through multi-Petabyte storage systems thanks to its scalable architecture and OpenZFS, and offers familiar desktop environments like Gnome, XFCE, and KDE.

This talk will give a brief history of FreeBSD and tour of its features. It will cover how FreeBSD is being used both directly and in derivatives like FreeNAS and pfSense.

As an expert in FreeBSD, bhyve, FreeNAS, and OpenZFS, the presenter is ready to answer any question you can aim at him.
