PostgreSQL: An Introduction to BARMAN
Working in a Scalable Databased Clustered Environment
Presented by:
Robert
First introduced to hangman on a mini computer playing the William Tell Overture, Robert is a very "old?" school hacker.
Robert discovered Linux after completing several years of much needed therapy overcoming the trauma of programming using punchcards. Eventually, he focused his open source activities on PostgreSQL and has since then worked in everything from mom and pop companies to fortune 50 companies. He has had the singular honor of conducting training at the famed Los Alamos National Laboratory.
After working several years in California's Silicon Valley, he returned to the Pacific Northwest to experience real weather. These days, he is the senior DBA at Zonar Systems, working in the heart of Seattle's downtown core.

The PostgreSQL ecosystem is incredibly sophisticated. At one time the only thing a PostgreSQL DBA had to worry about was to master this opensource database engine and leverage his knowledge of the operating system. Well, times have changed. The world for the DBA has expanded such that now he has to think in terms of whole clusters of database farms with all the requisite minutia of tasks including backups and disaster recovery on an ever increasing scale and that's not even talking about the cloud.
This talk focuses on what is becoming a very important requisite piece of technology called Barman.
Barman (Backup and Recovery Manager) is an open-source administration tool for disaster recovery of PostgreSQL servers written in Python. It allows your organisation to perform remote backups of multiple servers in business critical environments to reduce risk and help DBAs during the recovery phase.
I will cover the installation of Barman and how it can be used in conjunction with PostgreSQL. Such tasks as backups, restoration, replication, disaster recovery will be covered. Frankly, it's a very impressive piece of software because it simplifies a lot of tasks that were at one time manually managed by the DBA.
