Markus Feilner is a seasoned Linux journalist, author, trainer, consultant and manager from Regensburg, Germany.

The former deputy-editor-in-chief at Linux-Magazin Germany has been working professionally with Linux since 1994 and running his own company almost as long. Currently he is managing a global team of documentation experts at SUSE, Europe's largest Linux distributor, the creator of Enterprise Linux. Markus loves traveling the world and is regularly giving keynotes, workshops, presentations and speeches at conferences in Europe and the USA.

How to deal with management when you’re leading an OSS team. Within more than two decades in and around the FLOSS communities, Markus has seen several different approaches to leadership – and with this talk he will give an idea how different leadership in OSS enterprise teams works.

Very often we find that traditional leadership, American corporation approaches or e.g. German organisation don’t work well with the open source way. As a team lead at SUSE he has been acting as the API between enterprise needs (management) and people who’s main goal is to really make a difference and produce great stuff.

Examples how a leader can help the OSS geeks, nerds and hackers in a team to love their “job”, be creative and get the feeling that their work really counts while at the same time meeting enterprise goals and satisfying management.

He will tell about different approaches to finding solutions in unknown territories (science, code, noosphere) and will tell about conflict resolution, motivation and preparing a level playing field for creative inspiration and a whole lot of fun at work.
