The big cloud companies have too much of our data, and like to spy on us. Fortunately, open-source software can do much they can do, and we can run it on our own websites on computers we control... if we have the skills and time for server maintenance.

UBOS is a new, Archlinux-derived distro that makes self-hosting much simpler. For this hands-on session, bring your Linux laptop (or VirtualBox running Linux). I will walk you through running UBOS in a Linux container (so it won't interfere with your existing system) and you will fully install and run one or more web applications, such as Nextcloud (for file sharing and collaboration), Mediawiki (wiki), WordPress (for publishing), an RSS reader or others.

Yes, we can do this in an hour, even if you are new to server maintenance. If you bring a Raspberry Pi and install it there, you'll go home with a fully setup home server running the web applications of your choice.
