Kevin Burkeland

from Bellingham Technical College Instructor/LFNW Organizer

Kevin Burkeland is an instructor in the Information Technology program at Bellingham Technical College, in his spare time he messes around with linux and helps put on Linuxfest Northwest. In what seems like a prior life he was a Linux Sysadmin specializing in the AWS cloud and DevOps.

This lecture is for people with little to no linux knowledge who want to learn what all the fuss is about. In this lecture we will be going over basic vocabulary and talking about why people decide to turn away from Windows and macOS and seek the freedom linux provides.

This is meant to be a fun light overview of linux without getting into the nitty gritty. If you are looking to have some fun and and take a look at one of the most flexible interesting and fun operating systems then this is the lecture for you. Things we will be going over:

What the heck is linux?
Why should I care?
What is it good for?
How can I use it?
What the heck do they mean when they talk about:
Distros
Desktop Manager
Terminal
Package Managers
Root
Bash
And more
